Every year, on the 15th August, Poland enjoys a national holiday. Legend has it that on this day, the apostles on opening the Virgin Mary’s grave after her death, found fresh flowers and herbs instead of a body. It is now an annual festival for people across Poland to bless their herbs, fruit and flowers and pay respect and gratitude to the gift of life and yields of land.
The festival is known as The Assumption of the Virgin Mary and we had a celebration of our own here at Antokol. We gathered hampers of fresh fruit and vegetables. There were displays of fresh flowers picked from the garden, and some of our staff made beautiful headdresses using bright pink fuchsias and big blousy dahlias. It was a lovely celebration!
